Excellent news I've just found on the UK Film Council website. The Digital Screen Network is a scheme in which UK cinemas can sign up to and have installed state of the art digital projectors, payed for by Lottery money. In order to be eligable they have to agree to show a variety of independant, low budget and foreign language films on a regular basis. This is great, because 35mm prints are expensive, and smaller films cannot afford to have as many prints made. By using digital projectors the cost of prints (which won't even be prints anymore but digital copies) will be alot lower and as such smaller films will be able to have a much wider distribution. w00t!
