US 'hyping' Darfur genocide fears

Continuing my pillage of the guardian website for interesting stories I find news that Colin Powell is talking up the situation in Darfur as genocide, in an attempt, it would seem, to set up political conditions for the possibility of american troops to be sent over there to 'help'. So the real question is, what is it that Darfur has that the american government wants? Or is this just an opportunity to continue the momentum of the American military-industrial-media-complex and to continue to drive American citizens into a state of panic for the up-coming elections?
